Tooth Extractions

What is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction involves fully removing a tooth from its socket and spot in the jawbone. This is often done as a last resort. At our local dental practice, our dentist near you, Dr. Yousef Abdelghaffar, will discuss the specifics of your case and let you know if this is the best option. If so, a customized treatment plan will be designed just for you.

With all that said, there are a few different reasons why your dentist may advise this service:

  • Deep decay
  • A failed root canal
  • Impaction
  • Overcrowding
  • Preparing for orthodontic services
  • Gum disease
  • Oral trauma

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Simple and surgical are the two main types of dental extractions. Simple extractions are non-invasive and can be performed by general dentists in Burlington. Surgical extractions, also called complex extractions, require more invasive methods since the damaged tooth may be obscured by bone debris and tissue.

Wisdom tooth extraction is the most well-known form of complex treatment.

What to Expect at Our Dental Clinic

Dr. Yousef Abdelghaffar will administer local anesthesia or sedation dentistry, depending on your needs, to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. If needed, an incision will be made into the surrounding gum tissues to access the tooth. We use forceps to extract the unhealthy tooth, then seal the area with gutta-percha.

Typically, regardless of the type of extraction you receive, it is recommended that you fill in the gap left behind, so your natural teeth don’t shift. Dr. Yousef Abdelghaffar can discuss this further with you during a follow-up appointment. It is normal to experience some soreness or discomfort following the procedure, but this will go away in the following days.
